OLD MASTER PAINTINGS

The Barnabé Gallery was founded in 1993 and has specialized in Old Master Paintings for over thirty years.

Most of the activity is concentrated on French, Flemish, Dutch and Italian schools of the 17th century, mostly french artists of the Louis XIII and Louis XIV period, with an emphasis on those who worked in Italy at some point.

Most of the work is devoted to research, but also sales to museums, private collections, art professionals and other institutions. The result has been a plethora of discoveries, some of which are of major significance, as well as numerous sales to Museums over more than twenty-six years. Philippe Barnabé is in charge of research work, which has already led to the identification and recognition of important works by Anthony Van Dyck and many others; Philippe Barnabé has studied in situ almost all of the artist’s works kept in European museums and has acquired a fine expertise on Van Dyck.

Regular visits to archives, museums, and churches throughout Europe enable us to continually expand our knowledge; the Gallery has a documentation of more than 111.000 photographs.

We offer paintings on a variety of themes, featuring both lesser-known and great masters from the 16th to the 19th centuries, not focusing on passing fashions but rather on the intrinsic quality of the works.
