THE ARTIST

Son of marine painter Hendrick van Anthonissen and Judith Flessiers. They had posted their banns in Amsterdam in November 1630 (Jager 2016); grandson of Aert Anthonisz (Briels 1997). Due to a misinterpretation of the signature, Aert Anthonisz is mistakenly called Aert (van) Antum. Saur in 1992 refers under Antum (wrongly) to the whole family. His grandfathers were both marine painters: Aert Anthonisz and Balthasar Flessiers, as was his uncle Willem Flessiers. Her aunt, Janneke Flessiers, was married to marine painter Jan Porcellis (Jager 2016). Anthonissen was first married on September 28, 1662 to Catharina Herpers van Renen (née Leiden 1637) in Leiden (Jager 2016), then second to Machelina van Ijsselstein in Zierikzee in 1681.
