THE ARTIST

Hendrick Staets was active in Haarlem and Leiden in the mid-17th century and specialized in painting rough seas. His works are easily recognizable by the feathery brushstrokes he uses to depict the foaming sea. Our painting is characteristic of Staets' work and its largest known format.
